Will Helle Thorning-Schmidt succeed Antonio Guterres at UNHCR?
Early in September, the Danish governmentnominated the former prime minister as the next U.N. high commissioner for refugees as news came that Antonio Guterresplans to step down at the end of the year, debunking speculations he will seek another term. Guterres is in fact on a six-month extension, as his tenure was supposed to end in June.
Stories are going around that the U.N. refugee agency chief would vie to replace Ban Ki-moon as U.N. secretary-general. He has yet to confirm or deny the rumor.
