WikiLeaks: UK, US Anti-terror Strategies Cover Islamic Education in Bangladesh

The U.S. and U.K. governments are working toward making changes to Islamic education in Bangladesh to help counter regional terrorism, a leaked cable reveals.

The British Department for International Development has been teaming up with the U.S. to modify the curriculum of madrasahs - educational institutions that teach Islamic theology - as a “common counter-terrorism goal,” according to a diplomatic cable released by WikiLeaks.

U.K. and U.S. officials planned to appeal to Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, to develop and implement a standardized curriculum for unregulated madrasah schools, according to the cable. The move came after a proposal from the U.S. Agency for International Development for a madrasah “curriculum development program” in Bangladesh, the Guardian reports.
