Zambia called an emergency regional summit to discuss the political crisis in neighboring Zimbabwe, where the main opposition claimed President Robert Mugabe has stepped up a campaign of retribution against his opponents. Leaders from the 14-member Southern African Development Community (SADC) should meet in Zambia’s capital, Lusaka, on April 12 to discuss Zimbabwe’s “political problems,” Zambian President Levy Mwanawasa told reporters today in the city. Southern African leaders have previously been reluctant to publicly criticize Mugabe, a longstanding political ally. (Bloomberg)
