Access to Nutrition Foundation (ATNF)

The Access to Nutrition Index is published by the Access to Nutrition Foundation (ATNF), an independent non-profit organization based in the Netherlands dedicated to objectively assessing and improving the contribution the private sector makes to addressing global nutrition challenges. The Foundation hosts the Access to Nutrition Index. The aim of ATNI is to encourage companies to both increase access to healthy products and also to responsibly exercise their influence on consumers’ choice and behavior. The Access to Nutrition Index (ATNI) was designed through an extensive, multi-stakeholder consultative process. This was done to ensure that the Index would be a useful tool for different stakeholder groups (including the World Health Organisation, academia, civil society organisations, industry and investors) and that it would reflect the latest thinking and practices related to the private sector’s role in nutrition. In addition, the ATNI team reviewed a range of other indexes, rankings, and rating systems, such as the Access to Medicine Index, to understand best practices and build on lessons learned. ATNI’s design benefitted greatly from the experience of these other initiatives. The development of the ATNI was supported by the Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN). After an initial incubation period by GAIN, the Indexes are now owned and managed by the ATNF. The first Global Index, assessing the largest food and beverage manufacturers globally, was launched in 2013 and the second Global Index in January 2016. The Global Index will be published every other year. Since the launch in 2013, more than 40 investment firms have become signatories to the Access to Nutrition Index Investor Statement, with over $3 trillion assets under management. The Index is funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the Wellcome Trust and the Children’s Investment Fund Foundation.
