Breaking Ground

At Breaking Ground, they believe that everyone deserves a home. That’s why, since 1990, they have been providing permanent affordable housing for individuals and families who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless.  Beginning with a single building, they are now New York City’s largest provider of supportive housing. They own and/or operate 19 properties with a total of 3,530 transitional and permanent apartments in New York City and beyond. For chronically homeless people, they create safe, secure housing with essential on-site support services to help them address the psychosocial, mental, and physical health problems that are obstacles to independent living. For those at risk of homelessness, their affordable housing provides an all-important safety net. They also run the City’s around-the-clock street outreach efforts in all of Brooklyn and Queens, along with nearly one-third of Manhattan. Their work has enabled more than 13,000 people to overcome or avoid homelessness since 1990, and they increase that number every single day. As of 2017, they have more than 1,500 units of housing in various stages of development in the Bronx, Brooklyn and Queens, and are expanding their outreach and transitional housing programs so that they can offer help to every single homeless person they meet.
