Cassava Republic was set up in 2006, after a few years of contemplation and planning. African writers were being increasingly published and read overseas, with little knowledge or availability of this new wave of talent in Nigeria. The conversation about African writing was taking place elsewhere. Something had to be done.
Ten years later, they are a small but established publishing brand, with a reputation for bringing out high quality fiction and non-fiction for adults and children alike. While the base remains Abuja, Nigeria, last year they set up an office in London. They are also planning to extend the reach into the US later this year.
The mission is to change the way Cassava Republic Press all thinks about African writing. Cassava Republic Press thinks that contemporary African prose should be rooted in African experience in all its diversity, whether set in filthy-yet-sexy megacities such as Lagos or Kinshasa, in little-known rural communities, in the recent past or indeed the near future. Cassava Republic Press also think the time has come to build a new body of African writing that links writers across different times and spaces.
It’s therefore the right time to ask challenging questions of African writing - where have they come from, where are they now, where are they going? The role is to facilitate and participate in addressing these questions, as the list grows.
Cassava Republic Press is a publishing house based in Abuja, Nigeria. They publish books that are fresh, innovative, provocative, beautifully made and available at an affordable price.
In addition to fiction and quality non-fiction, they are currently developing a childrens and teens book list. They are highly aware of the lack of material with an African focus that is of good quality in this area. They believe that seeing oneself and one’s culture and society reflected in beautifully made children’s books is a vital aspect of building confidence and self-belief in the next generation.
