The Central Mining Institute (GIG) is a restructured scientific and development organization with 80 years of experience, which aim is to provide service for the mining industry, local authorities and private enterprises. 

The main subject of the activities includes: mining engineering, environmental engineering, quality problems, environmental resources management, water (rainwater) management, geospatial information systems, education and training including social and economic issues.

Experts and research teams of GIG provide multidisciplinary services supporting regional and local authorities as well as government institutions. Regarding water resources issue GIG guarantees an effective collaboration in programming of sustainable water management, water resources balancing both on local and regional level. 

The research works focusing on development of environmental friendly technologies and complex solutions with compliance to Water Framework Directive. Moreover, a broad scope of GIG activities is an tangible contribution in European Research Area. Thus, GIG has a wide experience in European RTD projects co-financed by FP, ECSC, INTERREG, LIFE and others.

The basic areas of GIG activities constitute: mining engineering, environmental engineering, problems relating to quality, education and training. GIG is one of the most acknowledged partners in such areas of activities as waste management, raw materials recycling, energy audits as well as modernization of energy economy of municipalities and enterprises, optimization of water supply and sewage disposal, environmental monitoring, Cleaner Production programme, programmes of sustainable development of municipalities (rural districts), and regions. Institute is a leading research organization working in clean-coal technology fields such as coal-bed methane, underground coal gasification, carbon capture and storage, shale gas.
