CMI (Crisis Management Initiative) is a Finnish independent non-profit organisation that works to resolve conflict and to build sustainable peace. CMI was founded by President Martti Ahtisaari in 2000. Based in Helsinki and with operations spread across the globe, CMI has a team of almost 80 dedicated professionals, bringing their experience and expertise in conflict prevention, conflict resolution and peace mediation to many of the world’s regions most affected by conflict. Around 20 long-term projects in the most challenging areas of the world, such as Yemen, Afghanistan, South Sudan, West Africa and the Caucasus Close to 80 dedicated conflict prevention and resolution professionals from over 20 different nationalities Finnish non-profit organisation founded by Nobel Peace Prize Laureate, President Martti Ahtisaari, in 2000 All conflicts can be resolved They believe that all violent conflicts can be resolved if there’s sufficient political will and skill. Achieving lasting peace requires long-term commitment, local ownership, creative solutions and broad involvement by everyone, including women and youth. CMI is a development cooperation partnership organisation of the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Finland, and closely works with key international and regional organisations, such as the United Nations and the European Union. What they do Mediation and Dialogue In this work, they directly engages with conflict parties and other stakeholders as a third-party, impartial facilitator. Their activities, which are always tailored to each individual situation, include among others: Mediation between formal conflict parties Engaging and linking various actors, especially women, to political processes Capacity-building Problem-solving workshops and workshops generating new ideas to key conflict issues Mediation Support Their work to support other third-party mediators in preventing and resolving conflicts in their target countries includes among others the following activities: Targeted trainings in various areas Experience-sharing seminars Conflict analysis and targeted briefings to mediators and key decision-makers Study tours/peer learning Conflict prevention and solution support In this work, where they support actors that can conduct conflict prevention and resolution activities inside their countries, their activities include among others: Targeted trainings in methodologies Joint planning workshops Advice on process design and implementation Consultations and workshops with specific interest groups
