Focus on Labour Exploitation (FLEX) works to end human trafficking for labour exploitation. To achieve this, FLEX works to prevent labour abuses, protect the rights of trafficked persons and promote best practice responses to human trafficking for labour exploitation by undertaking research, advocacy and by building awareness in this field. Through this work FLEX aims to: Ensure that the enforcement of labour rights forms part of national and international responses to trafficking for labour exploitation; Ensure that victims of trafficking for labour exploitation are recognised as individuals and rights-bearers; and Challenge policies, attitudes and practices that drive labour exploitation. Vision and Mission FLEX has a vision of a world in which there is no human trafficking for labour exploitation. Their mission is to prevent labour abuses, protect the rights of trafficked persons and promote best practice responses to human trafficking for labour exploitation by undertaking research, knowledge building and evidence based advocacy. FLEX operates on the values of: Respect for universal human rights – for all those vulnerable to human trafficking. Transparency – in all that they do including strong engagement of those the represent in their work. Equality – ensuring the work reflects and celebrates diversity. Innovation – questioning, probing and reviewing rather than sticking to what the know. Diligence – quality and rigour are fundamental to the work. Victim-centred – the voices and needs of victims are core to the work. Achievements Since its establishment in 2013 FLEX has grown steadily to become a leading voice in the field of trafficking for labour exploitation. Some of FLEX’s main achievements have included: Establishing itself as a leader in policy and practice to prevent trafficking for labour exploitation in the UK through strong engagement with the development of the UK Modern Slavery Act and more recently the Immigration Bill. Making labour inspection and the enforcement of labour standards central to the debate on modern slavery in the UK. Providing a bridge between policy processes and the needs and experiences of exploited workers through community level engagement with organisations and individuals working with potential and actual victims of labour exploitation. Promoting corporate and government accountability for human trafficking, forced labour and slavery in ten countries worldwide, through the development of the unique and publicly accessible online Labour Exploitation Accountability Hub. Pioneering new approaches to the identification and support of victims of trafficking for labour exploitation by piloting strategies to increase community identification, to boost the provision of counselling, to ensure victim’s understanding of support entitlements, and to improve access to legal remedies.
