About

The Global Call to Action Against Poverty (GCAP) is a southern-led movement that challenges the structures and institutions that perpetuate poverty and inequality.

GCAP supports people in their struggles for justice and brings individuals and organisations together to challenge the institutions and processes that perpetuate poverty and inequalities. Together, they defend and promote human rights, gender justice, social justice, climate justice and the security needed for the dignity and peace of all.

National Coalitions and Constituency Groups, which are the base for action, collaborate on regional and global campaigns. Their constituents include women, youth and socially excluded movements, NGO platforms, community and faith groups, international NGOs and others who call for action from world leaders to meet their promises to end poverty and inequality.

In September 2015, the constituents of the GCAP Global Assembly declared they would work together in a new form from 2016 to build a strong, progressive global action for justice and to eradicate inequalities and poverty. The New GCAP will make inequalities visible by creating spaces and processes for people who are marginalised or live in vulnerable situations. They will also increase the capacity of the network's grassroots constituencies to engage with and challenge national governments to hold them to account to their SDG commitments.

Launched at the World Social Forum in 2005, GCAP has mobilised hundreds of millions of people and co-organised the world's largest issues-based mobilisation, as certified by Guinness World Records. Over the past several years, and through consultations in 39 countries, GCAP has insisted on the centrality of addressing inequalities and guaranteeing the active participation of people in the Agenda 2030.

GCAP works for social justice, against a backdrop of obscene inequality, both within and between countries. They envision a world where economies create prosperity for all and not a select few, where governments, people and the private sector respect and treasure the planet so that it will be habitable not just for them but for generations to come.

Their mission:

GCAP supports the people in their struggles for justice and brings people and organisations together to challenge the institutions and processes that perpetuate poverty and inequalities across the world, to defend and promote human rights, gender justice, social justice and security needed for the dignity and peace of everyone.
