Institute for Peace and Democracy (IPD) was established in 2008 by the Government of Indonesia as the implementing agency of Bali Democracy Forum. It was inaugurated by the President of Indonesia on 10 December 2008.
IPD is headquartered in Bali and established based on Memorandum of Understanding between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Indonesia and Udayana University, Bali. The Ministry also conducted an international search to fill the position of the Executive Director of IPD.
To support the activities of IPD, the Government of Indonesia allocated special state fund to build IPD’s headquarter on the land provided by Udayana University.
Over the years IPD realizes that in order to work and manage donor’s funding efficiently and with flexibility and accountability, IPD needs to change its legal status to become a foundation.
With guidance and recommendation from the state’s auditor body or Badan Pengawas Keuangan dan Pembangunan, in 2015 IPD legally and officially becomes a foundation. The changing of IPD’s legal status has no implication to its programs and networks. IPD has wide access to the Government of Indonesia and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in particular, to the governments of the country partners and those of donor countries. In implementing programs and activities, IPD works closely with those institutions, its networks at national, regional and international levels (like-minded organizations, think-tanks, universities and Governments), and pool of experts on issues of election, political party, media, decentralization, human rights, etc.
A peaceful and democratic world, delivering on its promise of balancing social justice and growth through public institutions that are responsive, accountable and respect the aspirations and diversity of all people and a strong and vibrant civil society.
