Legs4Africa, in conjunction with partner clinics and support staff in Africa, work to provide a means of independent living for amputees. Thye collect and recycle prosthetic limb components, sourced from UK hospitals and private donors, for adaption and fitting by trained technicians at partnering hospitals in Africa. They believe that each and every amputee in low-income societies should be accounted for and that leg amputation must not result in immobility and isolation. They work towards building reliable systems and infrastructures to provide equipment, rehabilitation and ongoing support for amputees. They support the empowerment of amputees across Africa so that they may dispel current stigmas by proving that disability does not equate to inability. Vision Legs4Africa’s vision is of an Africa which sufficiently cares and provides for its amputees. Mission Legs4Africa’s mission is to improve the quality of lives of amputees in Africa by giving them the resources they need. Objectives (a) the advancement of health and/or the relief of human suffering. (b) the relief of those in need, by reason of ill-health and/or disability and/or financial hardship by the provision of prosthetic limbs and other mobility equipment (which is collected in the United Kingdom and which would otherwise have to be disposed of under EU law) to individuals in need of prosthetic limbs in Africa who cannot afford, or otherwise do not have access to, such healthcare. The World Health Organisation states that just 1 in 10 people with physical disabilities in the developing world have access to assistive technology.
