All-Ukrainian environmental NGO MAMA-86!
In 1990, young mothers with a university education, concerned about the health effects of the Chornobyl disaster, came together to protect the interests of their children. Since 1991 we have been the Kyiv City Non-Governmental Organization MAMA-86-Kyiv, and since 2001 MAMA-86 has been registered as an All-Ukrainian. The organization now includes 19 regional units. The head office of MAMA-86 is located in Kyiv.
For 25 years MAMA-86 has been actively contributing to sustainable development through monitoring and analysis of environmental policy, advocacy, raising public awareness and implementing projects in three priority areas:
1) Greening policies and practices
Objective 1: Ensure that the public is fully involved in the transparent implementation of the State Environmental Policy and the National Action Plan.
Goal 2: Promote environmentally friendly lifestyles, sustainable consumption and production in Ukraine.
Objective 3: Establish and ensure a consistent functioning of a systematic stakeholder dialogue on meeting the requirements of the Aarhus Convention on the activities of nuclear facilities.
Goal 4: To carry out public monitoring and to ensure public participation in the process of Ukraine's integration with the EU in the field of nature protection.
2) Accessible and safe drinking water and sanitation for all
Objective 1: Introduce mechanisms for public participation in water management.
Goal 2: Promote equal rights for water and sanitation in Ukraine.
Objective 3: Implement and promote best practices in water use and sanitation in Ukraine.
3) Safe regulation of hazardous chemicals and wastes
Objective 1: Successful implementation of the four chemical conventions (Stockholm, Rotterdam, Basel and Minamatsk) and the Strategic Approach to International Chemicals Management (SCMRD).
Objective 2: Introduce safe and efficient management of hazardous wastes (unsuitable pesticides, by-products, etc.) and toxic chemicals.
Objective 3: Solid waste management is carried out in a proper and sustainable way, both in households and in settlements.
