Millennium Promise Japan

The Millennium Promise Japan (MPJ) is a Japanese based Non-profit organization that was formed in April, 2008 and is involved in education, food and material assistance and disaster response to affected countries across the globe. The organization has been supporting the Millennium Villages Projects in Sub Saharan Africa over the years. The organization in collaboration with Platform Japan, a Japanese organization that receives funding from the Japanese Government decided to reach out to the flood victims in Malawi. This was in cognizance of the misfortune that befell Malawians in the 2014/15 rainy season where many houses and crops were washed away as a result of flash floods. The MPJ sought to support the flood victims of the selected districts of Zomba and Mulanje with relief items while at the same time it also wished to promote locally produced products. The MPJ partnered with the One Village One Product (OVOP) programme in Malawi in this endeavour. OVOP is a Government programme that seeks to improve the lives of local farmers by encouraging value addition of locally available resources in their respective communities. Currently, the OVOP programme is supporting one hundred and eleven (111) groups of which over fifty-five (55) Cooperatives are bringing products on the market. Some of the products being produced are; rice, cooking oil (sunflower and groundnuts), Moringa soap, baobab oil, honey and soya products. The MPJ planned to donate locally produced Sunflower cooking oil through OVOP. OVOP groups selected for this mission were Kamwendo and Mthiramsembe Cooking oil Cooperative of Mchinji and Madisi Agro-processors of Dowa. The cooking oil produced by these Cooperative is very nutritious as it is produced using the Cold pressed method which maintains more Vitamins as compared to other methods of producing oil. The MPJ also procured sunflower cooking oil from Sunseed oil limited which is based in Lilongwe. The company also uses local raw materials and employs over 1000 local Malawians.
