Ministry for the Environment and for the Protection of the Territory and the Sea (Italy)

The Ministry for the Environment and for the Protection of the Territory and the Sea is the governing body responsible for implementing environmental policy. Established in 1986, it performs functions in the fields of: protection of biodiversity, ecosystems and marine-coastal heritage, land and water conservation, policies to combat climate change and global warming, sustainable development, energy efficiency and the circular economy, integrated management of the waste cycle, reclamation of sites of national interest (SIN), environmental assessment of strategic works, contrast to atmospheric-acoustic-electromagnetic pollution and risks deriving from chemical products and genetically modified organisms. It plays a role of direction and supervision on the activities of the Higher Institute for Environmental Protection and Research (ISPRA) and of national parks and marine protected areas. Promotes good environmental practices, sustainable mobility and urban regeneration according to sustainability criteria. It deals with the promotion of environmental education in schools. Its activity in the international fora is intense, its role in the management of the funds of the community programs is central. The Ministry avails itself of the collaboration of the Capitanerie of Porto-Guardia Costiera and of the Command unit for the forest, environmental and agri-food protection of the Carabinieri (CUTFAA).
