Ministry of Energy and Water Resources (Tajikistan)
The Ministry of Energy and Water Resources of the Republic of Tajikistan was established in accordance with Decree of the President of the Republic of Tajikistan dated November 19, 2013, No. 12 on the basis of the Ministry of Energy and Industry of the Republic of Tajikistan by transferring to its authority the functions of the policy and regulation on water issues from the abolished Ministry of Land Reclamation and Water Resources of the Republic Tajikistan and branches from the former Ministry of Energy and Industry with industry related functions.
The Ministry of Energy and Water Resources of the Republic of Tajikistan is one of the key ministries in the Government of Tajikistan, dealing with water and energy issues, which are strategically important resources for the socio-economic development of the country.
Bringing water and energy resources under the umbrella of one ministry is very timely for solving many problems on the basis of a nexus approach. This is especially important for Tajikistan, where about 98% of the electricity is generated using water resources.
The Ministry carries out its activities in the field of implementing water and energy policies, developing strategies, programs and plans for the development of the fuel and energy complex and water resources, management, regulation, design, capacity development, state control, assistance in the rational use and protection of water resources in cooperation with other state bodies, local executive bodies of state power, public and international organizations.
The Ministry also provides leadership and state control and supervision in the areas of energy and safety of hydraulic structures through its structural divisions - the State Service for Supervision of Energy and the State Oversight Service in the field of safety of hydraulic structures.
The Ministry is also entrusted with the functions of coordinating the activities of various ministries and departments dealing with issues related to various aspects of the management, use and protection of water resources. In particular, the Ministry is the leading agency in the National Dialogue on Water Policy in the field of IWRM.See more
