Mission of Japan to ASEAN
As the newly inaugurated Ambassador of Japan to ASEAN, I would like to extend my warmest greetings. I intend to do my best to fulfill the responsibility to further expand common benefits of Japan and ASEAN, as the ASEAN region is ever increasing its significance for Japan.
Last year marked the 45th anniversary of ASEAN-Japan Friendship and Cooperation. The relationship between Japan and ASEAN began in 1973, only six years after ASEAN was founded, and Japan is ASEAN's one of the oldest friends. The relationship has become multilayered and very close through the last 45 years.
Sharing universal values such as the rule of law, Japan and ASEAN are important partners for the peace and prosperity in the region. In addition, ASEAN is one of the most important trading partners for Japan. With more than 12,000 local offices of Japanese companies operating in the region, Japan and ASEAN are forging a strong business partnership as well.
The people-to-people exchanges between Japan and ASEAN are also very vibrant. For example, ASEAN has been the most popular destination for Japanese overseas travelers since 2012. The number of exchange students from ASEAN to Japan has increased by 5 times, surpassing 90,000 in the last 5 years.
The new Japanese era “Reiwa” has begun from May 1, 2019. In this new era, cooperating with ASEAN friends, I would like to do my best to further enhance the relationship between Japan and ASEAN.See more
