Motiva was established as an Information Centre for Energy Efficiency in 1993 by the Ministry of Trade and Industry (MTI) to promote the implementation of the Energy Conservation Programme of the Finnish Government. Motiva’s area of activities was extended to cover the promotion of renewable energy sources in 1996. As of December 2000 Motiva Oy is an impartial and state-owned joint stock company with 25 employees and annual turnover of € 4.8 million. Motiva’s objective is to implement the National Climate Strategy, the Energy Conservation Programme and the Action Plan for Renewable Energy Sources by activating the market for energy conservation, energy efficiency and renewable energy sources. Motiva’s vision is to be a focal actor in reducing environmental impacts in energy production and consumption.

Motiva employees form a broad entity of expertise. Motiva’s customers are the ministries responsible for implementing climate strategy, central organisations, organisations responsible for research and technology development, companies, associations and consumers.
