TD Sivakumar and G Sankari had been involved in gender and sexuality activism with the Chennai office of Sangama (Bangalore). Sangama’s financial support for its Chennai office ended in March 2013, since when both activists had been working on their own for the gender and sexuality minorities and sex workers in Tamil Nadu. They also represented the local issues at the national level in various forums. They felt the need to continue their work in a structured manner. So, Nirangal was formed and officially registered as a non-profit organization under the Indian Societies Registration Act, in November 2012. While the focus of Nirangal’s work continues to be gender and sexuality rights, they also advocate for the welfare of all marginalized communities like women, children, Dalits (oppressed castes), etc.
