Founded in 1989, Orbis is a privately-held global investment firm managing long-only and absolute return strategies. Since the firm's inception, their purpose has been straightforward: to empower their clients by enhancing their saving and wealth. They believe the best way they can do this is by applying our fundamental, long-term and contrarian investment philosophy, and they have structured they firm in a way that requires us to deliver meaningful value-for-money to their clients.
Orbis manages approximately US$25 billion of assets that have been entrusted to us by institutions, families and individuals. It employs over 400 people in nine countries, who represent more than 35 nationalities, speak more than 15 languages and come from a wide range of educational and professional backgrounds. The firm’s roots lie in South Africa, where their founder, Allan Gray, established Allan Gray Proprietary Limited in 1973 with the same investment philosophy.
A controlling interest in Orbis is held by a charitable foundation established by their founder. This ownership structure allows the firm to remain privately owned in perpetuity, which we believe is critical in enabling us to make contrarian investment decisions and ensuring we have the freedom to focus entirely on acting in the best long-term interests of their clients. It also ensures the majority of the distributable profits of Orbis are ultimately devoted exclusively to philanthropy.
