Rutherford & Chekene’s work as a prime consultant includes seismic assessments, retrofit designs and peer reviews under direct contract with government agencies, public institutions and private entities. For the United States Overseas Building Operations, we evaluated more than 20 embassy sites located in high seismic zones around the world. They have also evaluated multiple facilities in moderate to high seismic zones across the country for the United States General Services Administration.

BIM and Revit
Rutherford & Chekene was an early adopter of building information modeling (BIM) using Autodesk Revit Structure. R&C projects using Revit, which include university, research and healthcare facilities, have construction costs totaling $4 billion.
R&C incorporates principles of sustainable design into our work through the use of recycled materials, low VOC product specification, and careful selection of high-performance structural systems. Our practice includes measuring a structure's carbon footprint for comparison and optimal design choices. Examples of these designs include using exposed structure, which minimizes the need for finish materials and allows for nighttime heat purge; framing roofs to minimize solar panel support penetrations though roofing membranes; and defining a structural layout that facilitates future renovation.
Rutherford & Chekene's engineers are actively involved in developing new retrofitting standards that will ensure public safety and preserve historic structures for generations to come. Traditional seismic retrofit approaches for buildings have tended to rely solely on providing increased strength and stiffness to resist lateral forces. For many structures, recent performance type standards, such as ASCE 41, allow the design engineer to enhance seismic resistance by improving or simply recognizing a structure's ability to deform under strong ground shaking. R&C consistently employs the latest performance-based design methods and new technologies to reduce required strengthening. This not only limits cost, but also minimizes the impact to historic architectural elements.
Rutherford & Chekene provides a variety of specialty services, including peer review, value engineering and plan review. They offer both structural and geotechnical peer review services at all stages of a project, from schematic design and design development through construction completion. Their engineers review projects to determine the applicability of the structural system and evaluate the design to ensure code requirements and specified client criteria are met.See more
