St. James Healthcare has played an important role in the history of Butte, Montana. Founded in 1881 by the Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth, St. James has been known for generations for its mission of compassionate care and service to the poor. Today, that commitment is accompanied by St. James' reputation as a technological leader in Montana's healthcare industry and the largest acute-care hospital in southwest Montana. St. James is part of SCL Health, a nonprofit faith-based health system with 9 hospitals in three states.

History
The Sisters of Charity trace their origin as a religious community to the 1600s in France where Vincent de Paul and Louise de Marillac established the Daughters of Charity. The Daughters of Charity were dedicated to serving the sick and poor, and this heritage and tradition serve as the foundation for their health ministry today.
The Sisters arrived in Montana in the 1860s, and following the Battle of the Big Hole, they came to southwestern Montana to care for the sick and wounded. They ventured to Helena, Deer Lodge and Anaconda, and in 1881, opened a hospital in Butte to care for the city's copper miners. The lights at St. James Healthcare have been shining brightly ever since!
