About RPPO According to the Constitution of the Republic of Serbia, the public prosecutor’s office is an independent state authority which is in charge of the prosecution of perpetrators of criminal offences and other punishable acts and which undertakes measures for the protection of constitutionality and legality. The Republic Public Prosecutor’s Office is the highest public prosecutor’s office in the Republic of Serbia. The Republic Public Prosecutor exercises jurisdiction of the public prosecutor’s office within the scope of the rights and duties of the Republic of Serbia and is responsible for the work of the public prosecutor’s office and for his/her own work before the National Assembly. Public prosecutors are held accountable for the work of the public prosecutor’s office and for their own work by the Republic Public Prosecutor and by the National Assembly whereas lower-ranking public prosecutors are also held accountable by the immediately higher-ranking public prosecutor. The public prosecution system includes Republic Public Prosecutor’s Office, 4 appellate public prosecutor’s offices (in Belgrade, Novi Sad, Niš and Kragujevac), 26 higher public prosecutor’s offices, 34 basic public prosecutor’s offices and 2 prosecutor’s offices with special jurisdiction. Basic public prosecutor’s offices criminally prosecute perpetrators of criminal offences which are punishable under law by a term in prison of up to 10 years, higher public prosecutor’s offices criminally prosecute perpetrators of criminal offences which are punishable under law by a term in prison of more than 10 years and of other criminal offences stipulated by the law, appellate public prosecutor’s offices deal with the appeals, while the Republic Public Prosecutor’s Office handles cases regarding extraordinary legal remedies and directs and oversees the work of all public prosecutor’s offices. Furthermore, there are public prosecutor’s offices with special jurisdiction, Prosecutor’s Office for Organised Crime and Prosecutor’s Office for War Crimes, which have been established for the territory of the Republic of Serbia and which take action in cases both as the first instance and upon appeals, while the Higher Public Prosecutor’s Office in Belgrade includes the Department for Cybercrime, which also has jurisdiction over cases it is responsible for across the entire territory of the Republic of Serbia. The Republic Public Prosecutor is elected by the National Assembly at the Government’s proposal and upon obtaining the opinion of the competent committee of the National Assembly. The Republic Public Prosecutor is elected to a term in office of 6 years and may be re-elected. The office in public prosecution in the Republic Public Prosecutor’s Office is performed by a public prosecutor and 12 deputy public prosecutors, as well as 2 delegated deputy public prosecutors. Prosecutorial staff consists of consultants and employees who are in charge of administrative and technical operations, material and financial operations, accounting, IT and general administrative services. The work of the Republic Public Prosecutor’s Office is managed by the Republic Public Prosecutor who acts as its representative before other authorities, institutions and citizens. The Republic Public Prosecutor manages the prosecution’s administration, oversees the work of the departments, the Office for General Administrative Services and the Secretariat, constantly monitors the work of the public prosecutor’s office as a whole and the individual performance of the deputies and staff and undertakes measures which ensure that the operations of the Republic Public Prosecutor’s Office are carried out adequately, in a timely manner and efficiently. According to the type, scope and complexity of the operations as well as the need for the legal, prompt and efficient work process, the Republic Public Prosecutor’s Office shall establish the following organisational units: prosecutor’s office, departments, Secretariat and the Office for General Administrative Services. For the purpose of performing the operations that fall under the scope of activities of the Republic Public Prosecutor’s Office 20 positions are defined by the job classification with 43 employees
