Sunderland Bangladesh International Centre

he Sunderland Bangladesh International Centre was purpose built to meet the needs of the local Bangladeshi community.  The Centre is a focal point for the Bangladesh community and is OPEN TO ALL. The aim of the Sunderland Bangladesh International Centre is to provide a safe, secure, well managed, attractive and convenient meeting place for the Bangladeshi and wider local community in Hendon to meet and engage in activities.   The need for the centre was highlighted in the research carried out in 1989/90 by the Commission for Racial Equality where it was indicated that the Bangladeshi Community in Sunderland had a strong desire to see the development of a centre where they could meet and develop educational, cultural, social and related activities. The research also indicated that the Bangladeshi community were non-users of statutory and voluntary services because of the inappropriateness of available resources in terms of culture, style and language. In 1999 the Sunderland Bangladeshi Community Centre was set up as an independent charity limited by guarantee and managed by a voluntary Board of Directors. The centre provides a range of activities to all sections of the local community, it is a friendly vibrant and inclusive centre which is open to all of the community. In 2014 it changed its name to Sunderland Bangladesh International Centre to indicate the multicultural nature of its operations.
