The non-government voluntary development organization SUROVI came into operation on 0] February 1979 with the passionate effort of renowned social worker and decent personality Syeda Iqbal Mand Banu. Her feelings to the working children deprived from education sensitized her to take such an initiative.
The first school was established by SUROVI in 1979 with the child domestic workers. It was in a time when no one could think to establish school for domestic workers. The first student was ‘Shanu’ who worked as a maid at the residence of the founder.
The journey was really a big challenge in the initial stage. It was too difficult to bring the child domestic workers out of the residences of their employers. The volunteers went door-to-door from day-after-day to collect students. With the serious effort and serenity of the founder at last the school started successfully. Gradually a number of schools and non-formal education centers were established in different poverty stricken and slum areas in Dhaka City where slum and street children and working and out of school children having easy access and receiving education free of cost. With the firm commitment and serious effort SUROVI could diversify its program according to the needs of deprived and vulnerable children to promote their rights as well as many geographical locations across the country.
