The Aangan Trust
Vision: Aangan wants to make child protection everyone’s business, so that every child is safe everywhere, everyday.
Mission: Through their work they build and strengthen child protection systems to ensure that the most vulnerable children are safe, supported, in school, and assured of a childhood free from trafficking, child marriage, hazardous work, violence and exploitation.
Beliefs: The assumptions they work with are that they are all equal partners in children’s protection; that villains are usually circumstances not people; that leaders are people who can listen carefully with the intention to act. Their aspirations and values emphasize innovation, independence, being purpose-driven and responsive, always upholding the dignity of all people
Aangan’s journey started in one government shelter home in Mumbai where they came face to face with children who had been rescued from situations of grievous harm. Their understanding about the complexity of child harm and consequently their work has evolved over the years as they followed vulnerable children from the destinations of harm to the sources - to prevent children from being harmed in the first place.
Aangan's community-based prevention of harm model posits that children are safe when their protection is the concern of a broad range of stakeholders, working together. Therefore they work to strengthen formal child protection mechanisms so that government authorities become responsive and accountable. They also build local capacity to mobilize families and communities to be aware of child protection risks and enable them to work with local authorities for their children’s protection and development. And of course they work with children, so that they are empowered, aware, connected and supported to negotiate a safe future for themselves.See more
