The Professional Association of Decentralized Financial Systems of Benin (L’Association Professionnelle des Systèmes Financiers Décentralisés du Bénin) (Consortium Alafia)
The Alafia Consortium, since its creation in 1997, has known, like any other association, stages of evolution and institutional construction.
The initiative initially brought together Benin and Togo in the form of a framework for exchanging and sharing information on microfinance. With the support of the American NGO Catholic Relief Services (CRS) in Benin, 43 microfinance practitioners from the 2 countries began a consultation process from 1996. This framework enabled the institutions to make the diagnosis of the microfinance around 3 main problems: (i) institutional problems, (ii) the inadequacy of donor interventions in the microfinance sector and (iii) insufficient synergy between microfinance practitioners. After a year, the need to create institutional support became apparent. So,
promote the transfer of knowledge and know-how for the benefit of member structures through exchanges, training, workshops and other means deemed necessary;
strengthen relations between member structures and help promote regional integration;
facilitate greater access to finance for micro-enterprise promotion initiatives;
play the role of interface on the financial, social and political levels between the micro-finance structures, the State and the partners.
These initial objectives have subsequently evolved over time with regard to the strategic directions which the Association has adopted.See more
