About

The Union of Small Farmers and Ranchers has more than 80,000 members throughout Spain

The Union of Small Farmers and Cattle Ranchers (UPA) is the professional organization that groups, represents and defends the interests of professionals in agriculture and livestock in Spain. UPA is the organization that brings together the majority of the agricultural sector: family farms whose owners are small and medium farmers and ranchers.

UPA is integrated into the structure of self-employed workers of the General Union of Workers (UGT). The Union of Small Farmers and Cattle Ranchers has more than 80,000 members throughout Spain: professional farmers and ranchers in all sectors and in all the autonomous communities, who have in UPA the organization that represents them at all levels and provides the services that demand the agricultural exploitations.

UPA is part of the Economic and Social Council (CES) and participates in all forums of regional or national interlocution and representation in Spain. Likewise, UPA is a member of the Committee of Agrarian Professional Organizations of the European Union (COPA) - in which all the actions framed within the Common Agrarian Policy are debated and the corresponding proposals are made to the European Commission and the Council of Ministers of the European Union. European Union-; is present in the Economic and Social Committee (ESC) of the EU and is the first Spanish agrarian organization member of the World Farmers Organization (WFO).

UPA is the youngest agrarian organization in Spain. A youth that is reflected, above all, in two factors: the impetus of UPA to defend with their work the future of family farming and the rapid and enormous experience acquired in recent years, because UPA was born with the entry of Spain into the European Union and has grown in parallel to the integration of Spanish agriculture in the community and the dizzying evolution of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP).

The union activity of UPA reflects the permanent evolution of alternatives and proposals in the face of specific problems and major debates on the future of agriculture and the rural milieu. For all these reasons, UPA has become the reference agricultural organization in political, union, social and informational terms.

From its federal structures, UPA participates in the different negotiation and dialogue tables with the Ministries of Agriculture, Food and Environment; Economy, Treasury; Labor and Social Security, etc.

In the different autonomous communities, UPA is part of the Agrarian Chambers, where elections have already been held, and defends with solidarity criteria the future of farmers and ranchers. At sector level, UPA participates in all interprofessional organizations, sector platforms, etc.

UPA also has an office in Brussels, from which a specific follow-up of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) of the European Union is carried out; and it has representation in the EU Consultative Committees, as well as in the COPA and the European ESC.
