U.S. Embassy in Afghanistan

The United States established diplomatic relations with Afghanistan in 1935. Afghanistan is a strategic partner of the United States. Their partnership is comprehensive, strong and enduring. Their policy priorities in Afghanistan include: ending the conflict between the Taliban and wider Afghan society; disrupting, defeating and dismantling al Qaida, IS and other terrorist networks that pose a serious threat to the United States; preventing further attacks on the homeland by violent extremists based in Afghanistan; securing Afghanistan’s borders and their institutions; supporting civil and women’s rights gained since 2001; and meeting the basic needs of Afghan citizens. Despite its challenges, Afghanistan has tremendous potential for growth and economic development, and encouraging regional integration is central to sustainable development and prosperity.
