The United Nations Development Program (UNDP) is the United Nations development agency that promotes change and connects countries with the knowledge, experience and resources needed to help people forge a better life The General Assembly of the United Nations and the Economic and Social Council establish the general policies of UNDP. Its Executive Board provides intergovernmental support and oversees its activities, ensuring that it responds to the needs of the countries where the programs are implemented. As a knowledge-based organization, in addition to work on development projects, lobbying and policy advice in its priority areas of work, UNDP has an important emphasis on the generation and management of knowledge The objective of UNDP in Panama is to support the management of implementation and execution of programs and projects of benefit to the country aimed at achieving the Sustainable Development Goals and consolidating human development in the Republic. Their mission UNDP is present in 178 countries and territories, working to eradicate poverty, protect the planet and promote peace and justice around the world. About UNDP in Panama The UNDP Office started its activities in Panama as a development agent in 1973, since then - at the request of the Government of Panama - UNDP has supported the implementation and execution of programs and projects benefiting the country aimed at achieving the objectives of Millennium Development and consolidate human development in the country. In this context, six Ministries and thirteen Decentralized or Autonomous Institutions serve as the Implementation Agency (National Execution) within the framework of a portfolio of development and technical assistance projects. The Ministry of Economy and Finance (MEF), as responsible for the coordination of reimbursable and non-reimbursable cooperation, participates in the formulation and monitoring of the Country Program. The funds used by UNDP in Panama come from the Government (through various government institutions such as ministries, decentralized authorities, autonomous agencies, among others); contributions from multilateral banks (Inter-American Development Bank and World Bank); the Spanish Agency for International Cooperation; UNDP Trust Funds and the United Nations System; as well as UNDP own funds. Their mandate The assistance provided by UNDP in Panama is widely recognized for the good management of resources and specialized technical advice to the best advantage of national priorities. Its credibility, objectivity and impartiality have allowed it to add wills and support, facilitating alliances that favor and consolidate efforts around sustainable human development. Given the breadth of its mandate - combating poverty and promoting development - UNDP has focused its work on 4 areas where it has experience and comparative advantage in the issues identified as important by the member countries of the UN and 2 crosscutting axes. These areas of focus also called "practice areas" or "areas of operation" are defined as follows: Poverty Reduction, Democratic Governance, Environmental Protection and Crisis Prevention and Recovery. Representation of the UNDP in Panama In the countries, the UNDP Resident Representative is also the representative designated by the UN Secretary General for development operations. The purpose of the Resident Coordinator system is to unite and coordinate the different agencies of the system to ensure the effective use of United Nations aid resources. In turn, to establish joint actions between organizations and programs, within the framework of the reform that advances the organization to achieve a more efficient cooperation. Currently, he occupies the position of Resident Representative of UNDP and Resident Coordinator of the UNS in the country, the Costa Rican economist Harold Robinson, while Fernando Hiraldo is the Deputy Resident Representative of UNDP in Panama.
