Xi’an Jiaotong University
Xi'an Jiaotong University is the earliest famous institution of higher learning established in China and well-known at home and abroad. It is also a key university directly under the Ministry of Education.
At the end of the 19th century, the Sino-Japanese War was defeated and the nation was in danger. Sheng Xuanhuai, a well-known modern industrialist and educator, upholds the belief that “self-improvement is the first in Chucai, and Chucai must first learn”. He founded Nanyang Public School in Shanghai in 1896, and was named Jiaotong University in 1921. The school adheres to the tenet of "seeking practicality and doing business" and emphasizes the goal of "cultivating first-class conduct, seeking first-class learning, creating first-class undertakings, and becoming a first-class talent". By the 1920s and 1930s, a well-known university with unique "Science and Technology Management" characteristics was formed, which was hailed as the "MIT" of the East. During the war of resistance against Japan, the school moved to the concession, moved to Chongqing inwards, insisted on running schools in Shanghai and Chongqing, and in order to resist external insults, many students voted to fight in the battlefield. On the eve of liberation, teachers and students actively participated in the democratic revolution and the struggle for liberation, and the school was hailed as a "democratic bastion".See more
