Broadly experienced in conservation: particularly in Papua New Guinea and other tropical countries and in the United States; as a project and program manager and supervisor; as an academic researcher, as a teacher of undergraduate and graduate level courses; as a postgraduate supervisor and mentor; as a manager of field stations; as an expedition organizer and leader; and lecturer and author for general audiences. I have helped form several non-profit organizations and currently am on the board of two, including Board Chair of the Papua New Guinea Institute of Biological Research. I have built successful and dynamic conservation programs and teams from the ground up in the United States and Papua New Guinea.
Expert in rainforest ecology, ornithology, and conservation biology, particularly New Guinea and northeast USA. Ph.D. from the University of Miami (1995). Over 50 peer reviewed articles and book chapters. Author of articles and a book for general audiences. I have done consulting work for environmental impact assessments for mining and forestry projects in Papua New Guinea. I have mentored and help secure scholarships for postgraduate (MSc and PhD) studies abroad for more than 20 young Papua New Guinean biologists and conservationists. I have strong ties across the international conservation and ornithological communities.
I have extensive experience in all phases of grant writing through to management and reporting, having raised and executed over eight million USD in grants for research and conservation.
