Writer of character-driven narratives that explore science, history and culture. Work has appeared in Smithsonian, Outside, Washingtonian, The Village Voice, The Washington Post and The American Scholar. Books include Ginseng, the Divine Root (2006, Algonquin), an adventure through the medicinal plant trade and Soul of a People (2009, Wiley) about a pivotal moment in the 1930s. Wrote and co-produced the award-winning Smithsonian television documentary film titled Soul of a People: Writing America's Story. Also wrote Worlds of Sound: The Ballad of Folkways, another Smithsonian documentary. Watch for Cork Wars: Intrigue and Industry in World War II, coming out fall 2018 from Johns Hopkins University Press.
