Emmett F.

United States

Summary

Emmett Fitzgerald is the Director of the Contemplative-Based Resilience (CBR) Project, an organization that advocates on behalf of humanitarian relief workers. We also demonstrate our philosophy through training programs which provide the knowledge, skills and peer support that people in refugee camps need to do their life-saving work. In a survey by the Guardian newspaper, 79% of relief workers reported mental health issues. Over 50% of those surveyed had experienced heightened states of anxiety, 44% had suffered with depression and over 20% had gone through panic attacks or post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The CBR Project is the result of more than a decade of collaboration between relief workers, psychologists and trauma specialists who together developed a training program incorporating yoga, meditation and mindfulness practice to bring greater calm, mental strength and resilience to relief workers. Emmett began his career as a management consultant with Deloitte and has subsequently worked in the field of humanitarian response and development for over ten years. He began with 18 months in Congo and most recently deployed to Nepal with the UN after the 2015 earthquakes. From 2010 until early 2014, he was involved with the earthquake response in Haiti, first as the manager of a camp of 25,000 displaced people, then as a UN policy advisor to the Government of Haiti, and subsequently as consultant to the World Bank. Emmett has also worked in policy and advocacy roles for the Gates Foundation and Nike Foundation. Emmett has an undergraduate degree in Theology from Oxford University and received a Fulbright scholarship to attend Columbia University, where he earned a master's degree in international affairs. While recovering from his time in Haiti, he spent a year writing a book, which involved living three wonderful months each in Ireland, London, France and San Francisco. He currently lives in New York.
