Dr. Rwakimari is a Public Health Specialist with over 20 years of progressive management and leadership experience. His work experience includes extensive collaboration with Ugandan and International NGOs, private companies and public health institutions for the enhancement of community health in Uganda. Highlights of his health program management experience include leadership of the team that eradicated Guinea worm in Uganda, and development of the nation’s current Indoor Residual Spray program as a malaria vector control strategy. He is a recipient of the Jimmy and Roselyn Carter Award for his efforts to eradicate Guinea Worm, and recognition of the leadership role he played in it’s eradication led to his appointment by the Ministry of Health as head of National Malaria Control Program, where he directed an expanding portfolio of malaria prevention, treatment, and control activities from May, 2004 to August, 2008. From August 2008 to July 2009 he headed Uganda’s National Onchocerciasis Control Program, where he directed its national control and treatment activities throughout the country. Dr. Rwakimari is currently employed by Abt Associates as the Chief of Party Uganda Indoor Residual Project from August 2009 to-date. He recently received the Best Innovation Award from Abt Associates at the annual Chiefs of Party conference June 2011. Dr. Rwakimari has a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery degree from Makerere University and a Masters degree in Public Health from the University of Leeds. He has completed post-graduate training certificates in Clinical Epidemiology from Emory University through the CDC, and in Health Care Management from Harvard University.
