I am passionate about global health and have a keen interest in disease prevention programmes, having worked for PAHO/WHO consultant in my home country, the Dominican Republic.
The health reality of my country greatly contributed to my understanding of the importance of focusing on prevention rather than treatment of diseases, and to develop a curiosity in tropical medicine, global health and public health fields.
I have been putting into practice the knowledge gained through my career, focusing on a macro scale rather than through individual patients. During this time I facilitated the improvement, strengthening and monitoring of disease surveillance through technical support, promotion and aid to the Ministry of Health and corresponding actors. I synchronized the development and implementation of national response guidelines, the national influenza preparedness plan and associated training.
In addition, I have worked on the implementation of the International Health Regulations (IHR) in the Dominican Republic, including prevention, preparation and response to outbreaks and disasters. Within the PAHO/WHO health emergency department, I was the team leader that responded to Hurricanes Irma and Maria path through the Caribbean. I was in charge of the situation room and the lead Humanitarian responder for refugees from Dominica.
