I have a passion for data visualization, in particular maps. It is where data science meets arts. From a data science perspective, visualization helps to explore, analyze, and communicate data. From an artistic point of view, it is all about beauty, elegance, and harmony. By combining these two fields, data visualizations become meaningful and appealing.
What I also find very interesting is how to use big data for the production of official statistics. Standard methodology has been developed for survey and administrative data, but not yet for big data. I am especially interested in sensor data, such as mobile phone data, road sensor data and satellite data.
I am an active user of the programming language R, which is a Swiss army knife for data scientists, with only a few code lines required to analyze data and create data visualizations. I am the author of three R packages: tmap, a system to plot thematic maps, tabplot, for visualizing large tabular data, and treemap, for plotting hierarchical data.
