Md. Sirajul I.

I carried out my PhD research work at the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI), Philippines and obtained a PhD degree in Agronomy from Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh on Physiological traits for high grain yield, lodging characteristics and crop management for improving lodging resistance of hybrid rice. I have more than 24 years professional experiences which includes teaching, consultancy, research and development work in the Agriculture sector. I started my career as a Lecturer at the Department of Agronomy of the Patuakhali Science and Technology University in 1993. Later in 1994, I joined Bangladesh Rice Research Institute (BRRI) as a Scientific Officer in the Agronomy Division. I was promoted to the position of Senior Scientific Officer in 1999 and served there for a period of 15 years. I moved to BRAC in 2008, the largest NGO of the world, for bigger engagement to contribute in the development of marginalized people through agricultural interventions. Presently I am working as the Head of Agriculture and Food Security Programme of BRAC. My current work is focused on providing strategic leadership in agriculture and food security programme, leading innovative applied and adaptive research on different crops and fast track diffusion of cutting-edge agricultural and aquaculture technologies in the farmer’s field for sustainable intensification of rice-based cropping and aquaculture systems in Bangladesh. I have developed a comprehensive, year-long ‘Nutri-garden’ homestead food production system to increase dietary diversification, and improve nutritional status through naturally nutrient-dense crops at the household levels. I also have experience in managing value chain development, facilitating market linkages with private sector engagement, and providing local community partners with capacity building support. I have also been representing BRAC in many national and international committees, conferences and workshops and have been able to project the image of BRAC as a civil society organization doing substantial work on agricultural development in collaboration with the government. I have also developed collaborations with a number of CGIAR centers and supervised a number of projects with these international agricultural research centers where I have mobilized substantial amount of resources. I have more than 50 publications in national and international journals, proceedings and books.
