Humans can be messy, which is what keeps Philip eternally fascinated with his work of leveraging culture, communication, and design to change behavior.
Philip, a founder of Appleseed, is a practitioner of social marketing, working with development organizations to get people in poor communities to adopt solutions and ideas that improve lives. Appleseed currently has projects in Guatemala, California, Taiwan, and Kenya. To learn more, visit www.appleseedimpact.org
Before Appleseed, at S. Groner Associates, Inc. (SGA), Philip designed and ran campaigns on behalf of local government agency clients in California to create social or environmental change within target populations. Going beyond raising awareness or providing education, Philip's work changed behavior: keeping thousands of anglers from eating contaminated fish, stopping youth from littering, and reducing outdoor watering by homeowners during California's worst-ever drought.
Before SGA, Philip was an engineer and spent a year working on clean water projects in rural Ecuador and China where he discovered that providing access and education were only part of the equation for change. Since then, he's been dedicated to learning about human behavior and the forces that guide decision-making so he could return to the developing world with Appleseed and apply marketing where it's needed most.
