Somia is a Certified Environmental Professional (EP) and a Registered Professional Planner (RPP), specializing in Natural Resource Management and Indigenous and Community engagement. Somia’s sectors of experience include oil and gas pipelines, industrial manufacturing and processing, mining and resource extraction and processing, transportation and infrastructure development, transmission lines and hydro and micro-dam developments. Her portfolio includes a range of planning activities, including: business growth and development and strategic pursuits in the renewable energy sector, corporate and project health & safety, environmental management systems, strategic communications and planning, project management and coordination, environmental permitting, socio-economic assessments, development and execution of Indigenous and stakeholder communication and engagement programs. Somia's research interest is application of Free, Prior and Informed Consent (FPIC) to law and policy in the mining sector in Canada. Somia actively participates as a guest speaker at University of Manitoba and industry events, and is an active member of several professional associations.
