Regional Manager: Outstanding Returns at South African Revenue Service

Currently a Regional Manager in the South African Revenue Service (SARS) managing a unit responsible for compliance and risk management in the debt and outstanding returns environment. Prior to my current position, I managed various portfolios relating to compliance and risk management (Tax and Customs specific); policy framework development, implementation and monitoring; relationship management between SARS, the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), our national strategic partners and foreign revenue counterparts; knowledge management; managing compliance risk engines and analytical tools; and utilised as an Integrity Specialist within SARS, responsible for corporate governance related audits and investigations. At my previous employer, the South African National Defence Force, I was employed as an Intelligence Officer within Defence Intelligence, in the rank of Captain. My job description included intelligence collection and data analysis. Throughout my career I have been utilised in management and/or specialist positions, and have extensive experience in; operations management; compliance and risk management; operational risk management; corporate governance; intelligence; policy framework development; research and development; and managing a diverse work force. I have a Bachelor’s Degree in Military Science from Stellenbosch University (South Africa), a BA Honours Degree in Industrial and Organisational Psychology, and a Higher Certificate in Taxation from the University of South Africa. At present I am a final year student studying towards a Postgraduate Diploma in Risk Management through the before-mentioned institution, as well as a Senior Management Development Programme through Duke University (USA). Effective in working in a Strategic and Operational environment capable of modelling and parallel processing, using ideas, abstracts and concepts to test out possible combinations and produce something completely innovative and managing many different solutions or projects through parallel processing to provide integration across different and separate operating systems/processes and bring into being those products/services, outside relationships, structures and systems that are required for the organisation to continue to be viable and competitive in changing social and business environments. Giving equal attention to coordinating given activities, introducing new approaches of a strategic nature and supporting the human aspects of the management of change. Effective decision making based on: o Knowledge and an understanding of present trends in the industry, o Knowledge and an understanding of future trends in the industry, o Socio-economic environment, o Political environment, o Technological environment.
