Teyo van der Schoot holds a Master Degree in Rural Sociology & Development Studies (1986) from the Wageningen Agricultural University in the Netherlands. Through SNV (Dutch organisation for technical assistance and development cooperation) he has worked 8 years in Peru, in Quechua communities in Puno, and with farmers’ movement Rondas Campesinas in Cajamarca. Since 1997 he has workeds with Hivos (humanist institute for development cooperation). For several years he managed the portfolio of some 30 counterparts in Bolivia and Ecuador. Thematic areas included Microfinance, Organic Agriculture, Community Forestry, Gender, Human Rights, Arts & Culture. In 2005 he became Programme Manager for Human Rights & Democratisation at Hivos, leading a team of 10 staff members at head office and regional offices of Hivos, with a yearly portfolio of 12 million euro of partnerships in the global south. The last 5 years as Senior Advisor on Human Rights he has focused on action research and advocacy with indigenous peoples in the Amazon region.
