Dr. Waqar Ajmal is a renowned Public Health & Development Specialist recognized globally. In addition to his work in Pakistan and Afghanistan on polio through Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Dr. Ajmal has thirty-Six years of progressive experience at national and international levels (Asia, Africa and USA) in planning and management of large scale Public Health, Development programs and Emergencies. He has served as a team leader, short-term consultant and as a staff member of the UN, Government and NGOs. He has developed Primary Health Care and Community Development programs from a scratch to a point of full and successful functionality. During the course of his career he acquired significant cross cultural experience and managed large portfolios of professional and support staff. He also worked in community development and on poverty alleviation projects with the non-governmental sector in Pakistan as well as other countries in Asia and Africa. Dr. Ajmal has been involved in building constructive and strategic relationships with national and local government authorities, UN agencies, local and international NGOs and community-based organizations. He has experience in high level advocacy, emergency management, transition from Humanitarian Assistance to Development and has worked significantly on institutional development. He is renowned for using technical knowledge at highest levels to achieve desired outcomes. During the last 10 years, he dealt with the most senior professional circles and the highest offices (Presidents and Prime Ministers, Ministers, Governors, High level partner representatives) in the various countries that he worked in. He has had successes in consensus-building and getting agreements on complex and sensitive issues within the team and across the forums of partners and stakeholders. Dr. Ajmal is known for his vision and strategic thinking and translating it into action.
Largely his work has been for the most underprivileged communities in countries like, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Nigeria, Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda, Iran, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. In chronological order his experience in emergencies includes: Afghan refugee influx and health services in Pakistan 1981-1988, Mozambican refugees in Tanzania 1988, Ethiopian Refugees in Sudan 1989-1991 and IDP Crisis in Afghanistan 2000-2006.
In his last assignment as a Senior Program Officer with Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF) based at the Foundation headquarters in Seattle USA Dr. Waqar Ajmal has been the team lead/team member for polio eradication in Pakistan and Afghanistan. He has a successful track record in highest level political advocacy, fund raising, managerial and technical aspects of the program. He successfully carried out higher level advocacy, engaging highest level of governmental and traditional leadership (Presidents, Prime Ministers, Governors and Chief Ministers, Ministers & Community Leaders). Dr. Ajmal has staffed many meetings/calls of Bill Gates with Heads of States of Pakistan and Afghanistan and other important stakeholders for these two countries. He was instrumental in engaging the Pakistan Army for the benefit of Polio Eradication in Pakistan. Dr. Ajmal is also a recipient of awards for excellence of services in Polio Eradication in Pakistan from the President of Rotary International, the Governor and Chief Minister of the KP province of Pakistan.
