As AmeriCares celebrates its 25th anniversary year, the organization is strengthening, reshaping and expanding its domestic and international programs. Among these programs are our Patients Assistance and Domestic Distribution Programs. Through Patients Assistance Programs, AmeriCares and its pharmaceutical partners provide prescription medicines at no cost to indigent patients with serious health conditions. And through Domestic Distribution Programs, AmeriCares provides free clinics and other not-for-profit health program operators with critically needed donated medicines and supplies.
AmeriCares seeks a summer intern to study the potential for AmeriCares to significantly expand these domestic medical aid programs and to make recommendations for the organization about how to further develop the programs. The intern will report to the Senior Vice President for Strategic Development and will work closely with the Manager of Patient Assistance Program. The project will include a quantitative and qualitative assessment of individuals without access to medicines in the U.S. and the healthcare institutions that serve them, based on secondary research, surveys and interviews.
Areas of Responsibility: - Quantify need for donated medicines within the U.S. (uninsured and underinsured patients), segmented by the current source of medical care/medicine prescription - Understand how state government initiatives, not-for-profit organizations and pharmaceutical companies are addressing this need - Assess options for AmeriCares to expand the reach and impact of its medical aid programs, including patients reached, medicines needed, operating model (e.g., bulk donation to healthcare institution vs. fulfillment of individual prescriptions)
Preferred Qualifications: - MBA, MD, or MPH candidate - Experience conducting market assessments - Demonstrated interest in medicine, global health, or non-profit management - Initiative and ability to work independently

The success of AmeriCares has been characterized by timely response, meaningful impact, integrity and intense passion for the work. To provide aid to people in need, AmeriCares secures high quality product donations from the private sector, identifies local priorities to guide appropriate allocation and solicits funding to send the aid via airlift or ocean cargo to health professionals serving the poor. Each $100 in cash contributions enables AmeriCares to deliver more than $3,000 in commodity aid including medicines, medical supplies, nutritional supplements and relief supplies.
