Job Description

The Preparatory Commission for the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization with its Headquarters in Vienna is the international organization setting up the global verification system foreseen under the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT), which is the Treaty banning any nuclear-weapon-test explosion or any other nuclear explosion. The Treaty provides for a global verification regime, including a network of 321 stations worldwide, a communications system, an international data centre and on-site inspections to monitor compliance.

Duties and Responsibilities

Under the supervision of the Chief, Network and Data Systems Operations Section, International Data Centre Division, to: Define, implement and administer the configuration of database management software and relational databases in terms of functionality, capacity, performance, availability and contingency planning. Define, implement and administer security procedures for the database management software and databases, in terms of confidentiality, integrity and availability, in particular ensuring correct and reliable backups of databases. Restore the standard configurations and databases according to agreed contingency planning procedures. Diagnose and solve the cause for interruptions or other problems in database services, as necessary, together with service contractors. Establish criteria for measuring relational database performance and availability and provide regular reports relative to these criteria. Document the configuration of database management software. Recommend purchase of appropriate contracts for relational database management software, hardware and services and provide technical input for proposals to provide database management software and support to the secretariat and to evaluate proposals in response to the requests. Perform other duties as assigned which may include being on-call.

Qualifications

University degree in computer science or a related field. Ability to work well with people from many different disciplines with varying degrees of technical experience. At least five years experience in installing, configuring, administering, operating and maintaining large relational databases and database management systems. At least three years experience with the administration of the Oracle Database Management System. Excellent written and oral communication skills in English are essential. Working knowledge of one of the other official languages of the CTBTO Preparatory Commission would be an asset.

Remuneration/Contract

Depending on professional background and experience, indicative tax-free annual net base salary (inclusive of a variable element for post adjustment) from US$78,788 (without dependants) and US$84,406 (with dependants), subject to deductions of contributions to the CTBTO Provident Fund and Health Insurance Scheme. Additional benefits include, when applicable, dependency allowance, education grant for children, rental subsidy, six weeks vacation per year, home leave travel every two years. Initial contract for a fixed term of three years.
