More than 20 development agencies and research institutions have formed a partnership to develop new tools to boost the aquaculture sector’s role in global efforts to improve food security.

Leading the Aquaculture for Food Security, Poverty Alleviation and Nutrition project are the European Union and the Food Agriculture Organization. The bloc provided €1 million ($1.3 million) for the three-year project while FAO is tasked to manage it.

The project aims to develop systematic tools and update strategies toward better understanding of the role of aquaculture in efforts to improve food security in Asia, Africa, and Latin America and the Caribbean.

Tools and methodologies developed during the project cycle will be presented to development partners, particularly the European Union, to inform their planning for aquaculture-related assistance to the developing world.

The European Union and FAO’s partners include the WorldFish Center, the Institute of Development Studies, Network of Aquaculture Centers in Asia-Pacific and Kenya’s Ministries of Fisheries Development. These partners will be in charge of activities such as field-based research, gathering of grass-roots information, review of existing literature, national reviews, case studies and actual analysis of research findings.
