High-level panel set to tackle poverty in London

What suggestions did the development community give on how poverty can be eradicated at the household level? We’ll soon find out as a high-level panel tasked to craft development goals beyond 2015 is set to meet Oct. 31.

Recommendations poured in after the United Nations opened an online platform for suggestions from “citizens, charities and communities.” To be collated by a U.N. liaison service, these inputs will be central to the first of a series of meetings of the high-level panel.

Two independent think tanks — the Center for Governance Innovation and the Korea Development Institute — have suggested a shift from basic human needs promotion to a more “dynamic” approach to sustainable development.

Duncan Green, strategic adviser for Oxfam GB, emphasized the need to “bring power and politics into the center of the post-2015 discussion,” changing norms, influencing government decisions and giving other development players more tools for maximum impact.

Care International U.K. Head of Advocacy Alice Hutchinson, meanwhile, underscored the need to include “inclusive business models” in the negotiations, noting the role it could play in poverty alleviation.

After tackling household poverty in London, the high-level panel will be meeting again in Monrovia and Bali where national development and global partnerships, respectively, will be tackled. U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon will present a report based on these discussions to the General Assembly in mid-2013. The report will also be discussed further at a high-level meeting in September 2013.
