Outreach to academic circles
The Public Affairs Officer strengthens the existing academic outreach program by maintaining, deepening and expanding academia networks for the purpose of promoting the teaching of international humanitarian law and ICRC humanitarian operations in the United States and Canada. He/she maintains existing programs, such as a seminar for policymakers co-hosted by University of Virginia Law School and the Judge Advocate General's Legal Center and School, a seminar for law faculty co-hosted by American University's Washington College of Law, and a seminar for law students co-hosted by Santa Clara University Law School of Law. He/she develops new programs, events, courses and materials that support the teaching and promotion of international humanitarian law. The Public Affairs Officer liaises with the relevant units at ICRC headquarters and field delegations to reflect institutional priorities in the delegation's academic circles strategies.
He/she develops strategies that inform academics and graduate students of ICRC operations and humanitarian priorities, including by providing content for delegation publications.
The Public Affairs Officer will explore, and where necessary develop, research opportunities on ICRC priorities on such subjects as international humanitarian law, new developments in humanitarian action, and the role of diasporas in conflict and humanitarianism. This also may include working with national societies to develop a quantitative assessment of the educational value of programs such as "Exploring Humanitarian Law".
Support to American Red Cross/Canadian Red Cross
The Public Affairs Officer supports the American Red Cross and the Canadian Red Cross in the promotion of international humanitarian law. This includes working with these national societies on joint international humanitarian law courses, or in attracting the support of the national societies for ICRC international humanitarian law courses. It also includes supporting the national societies in the effort to implement "Exploring Humanitarian Law" in schools at a national, regional, and local level.
