Ahead of its final report on May 30, a U.N. high-level panel on the post-2015 agenda is making “good progress” after a meeting this week in New York with the blessing of Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.
The 27 members of the High-Level Panel of Eminent Persons appointed by Ban to draft recommendations for the post-2015 framework said in a statement released on Wednesday that they are making good progress on composing the report, in the face of various stakeholders expressing concerns that there have been ”too many cooks in the kitchen.”
Another issue on the table is whether inequality will be addressed, after a communiqué circulated by the panel in March was silent on the subject.
Ban Ki-moon conveyed at the meeting his “full respect and confidence” to the panel’s efforts on advising which goals to include after the MDGs expire on December 31, 2015, and lauded the 27 members for their inclusive and transparent approach under the leadership of President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono of Indonesia, President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf of Liberia and Prime Minister David Cameron of the United Kingdom.
This week, the panel reaffirmed its vision to “end extreme poverty in all its forms in the context of sustainable development and to have in place the building blocks of sustained prosperity for all.”
This will be possible, the advisory group added, through heightened global partnerships.
