    Education for all vs. learning

Millions of children in the developing world graduate from primary school not knowing how to read, write and do basic math. What can the aid community do better? We asked Miles on the sidelines of the 2012 Clinton Global Initiative.

    By Rolf Rosenkranz // 28 September 2012

The global community has been successful getting children to school. But it has not focused enough on what children are learning, according to Carolyn Miles, president and CEO of Save the Children USA. Data show millions of children in sub-Saharan Africa will graduate from primary school unable to read, write and perform basic math.

So what can the aid community do better? We asked Miles on the sidelines of the 2012 Clinton Global Initiative.

Lars Schwetje contributed reporting from New York.

Check out the rest of our interview with Carolyn Miles, as well as our conversations with other global development luminaries who attended this year’s Clinton Global Initiative.
